Malindi, Kenya – Tensions are rising in Malindi’s Mijikenda area, where local Jua Kali industry members have been caught in a dispute with municipal authorities over an eviction order. The industry, which has thrived for over 35 years, is home to artisans, Mama Mboga vendors, and small café owners—providing livelihoods for more than 1,500 persons.

According to community members, the municipal management has issued an order for all Jua Kali operators and small businesses within the area to vacate immediately. However, no formal written notice has been provided, raising concerns among traders who fear sudden displacement without compensation or alternative arrangements.

The controversy gained momentum as Shella MCA Twahir has taken a leading role in advocating for the forced eviction, citing plans to develop a modern market. While the government’s vision aims to modernise the area, local traders question the timing and transparency of the project, especially amid the ongoing economic hardships many face.

“The community has been operating peacefully here for decades. We are unaware of any relocation plans or compensation,” said one affected trader. “We need clear information—who is behind this project? Is it the county government or private investors? And where will we go?”

The traders also expressed concern over the lack of proper communication, stating that they have not received any formal notices and fear property damage during eviction. They further questioned the government’s intentions, asking whether the move aims to support local citizens or serve private interests.

Key questions remain unanswered:

  1. Who is behind the new market project? Is it a government initiative or a private venture?
  2. Given their long-standing presence in the area, where will the displaced traders be relocated?
  3. Will there be any compensation for those affected?
  4. What is the government’s broader plan for supporting local citizens during these challenging economic times?

As the situation unfolds, community members and stakeholders call for dialogue and transparency to protect the rights and livelihoods of the local traders. The dispute highlights the growing tension between urban development goals and the need to preserve local livelihoods in Malindi.
